No material support. Statements of agreement, yes, but nothing more than that. She is as hamstrung as we are by bureaucracy.

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
The only ones who don't seem to be tripping over their own red tape are the corporations.

[identity profile] mentis-reae.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I hope this is not about to become a lecture on capitalism.

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
No.

We do need to identify what strengths remain within our reach, within this system.

[identity profile] mentis-reae.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Our reach meaning the reach of the newcomers, or yours and mine?

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Those of us among the newcomer population who intend to establish ourselves into society here, those of us who are committed to civic participation, and would like to do so suffering minimal fear of persecution and violence.

You and I, along with everyone who has something at stake to work towards, invest themselves in, even if only until there is route 'home' or beyond the islands. Ours meaning everyone who is "stuck but committed to settling" and has talent and dedication to put forward for the city's benefit...we can all at least agree we should settle safely and in doing so become good citizens, rewarded for our hard efforts, yes?

...but ours meaning to the benefit of us all, really.

[identity profile] mentis-reae.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
What we have, and what we can do, depends heavily on the vicissitudes of the individual. Surely you've encountered this yourself - you'll be turned down by one person and then come back the next day, ask the same question, and receive a positive response.

This is the problem, truly, with this place. There is such uneven enforcement of all regulations, all rules. It's impossible to even know our strength when the resistance so varies.

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
And the ones who might tighten up regulations are, as you said, 'hamstrung' or otherwise bribed off, or underfunded, or just imbecilic.

Here is a question I think we ought to put to some thought: Is there anyone at this time who is positioned to succeed Governor Redgrave? If so, where do we stand with them?

[identity profile] mentis-reae.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
A good question. As I said, Chief Miller is highly competent, but she is...impolitic. Then again, after Redgrave's endless absurd doublespeak, that might sit well with the voting public.

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Realistically, such a person would probably need the even support of both corporate factions...

[identity profile] mentis-reae.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I know of no one who is supported by both the one and the other.

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
In a way, that only means we aren't too late.

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That if there is an ideal successor out there- a potential candidate for the Administration, he (or she!) may not yet be quite beyond our range of influence.

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
He has a hospital to run, I don't think he'd abandon it to take on the entire city.

Besides, most of the public...I...Dr. Pyke hasn't made a favorable impression on the necessary social circles, beyond acquiring the necessary funding to keep the medical center running. But that's mostly involved appealing to the charitable sensibilities of the wealthy.

[identity profile] mentis-reae.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
God knows he does seem to be the sort of voice that this city could use, however. [Very earnestly:] Would that one needed not to lie to earn elected office.

[A pause.]

What if we put forth one of our own number?

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[On the other end, Daedalus leans back and smirks, just a little too pleased with himself. There. That didn't take so much leading around to have him land right on it at all.

So he asks in softer, polite doubt, coaxing along- Edgeworth really does prefer to argue, after all.]

Do you think that's feasible, prosecutor?

[identity profile] mentis-reae.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not for victory, certainly. Even the most charismatic among us could never win the support of the majority of the city. But if we ran a formidable enough campaign, we could at least compel the frontrunner to make promises to us.

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Or an advisory position in the Bureau, councillor- ah...however it is that goes here.

[identity profile] mentis-reae.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
True. So-called "also-rans" frequently end up being put in a lesser position of power, as appeasement to their supporters.

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Which might be enough to at least get us a voice...

[identity profile] gaveherwings.livejournal.com 2010-12-06 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
The question remains then, who to run?

[identity profile] mentis-reae.livejournal.com 2010-12-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
[A long pause.]

Perhaps Ms. Mayer.
